Hi all, if I ping a device on another subnet that is connected to my distribution switch, will my switch learn the mac address of the device in the other subnet along the trunk link? I assume it will not ?

can anyone help here at all?

just to add, I mean the trunk link from my switch to the distribution switch, which is not a member of the vlan on the other side.

Hi

It depends upon u r toplogy .ie how u r doing u r intervlan routing usually the mac address will be learned on the trunk links.

Thanks

Mahmood

the vlans are seperated by the dist switch, the vlan for that side only exsist on the trunk link needed. ie vlan 2 on one side, vlan 3 on the other,

if im right vlan 2 mac addresses should not be on trunk or switches on vlan 3, is this correct ?

No, devices in one VLAN will not learn the MAC addresses in another VLAN, since to cross VLANs they have to be routed.
