ATM on Cisco 3620/3640

Hi Gurus,

Can either of this be used for the ATM connection? And if yes, please let us know the relevant modules and cables required for this.

Hi,

I recommend you use the newer ISR router for ATM connections. The 36xx beside being not supported anymore, are generally quite slow and do not do a good service. Beside, the ones you have would need upgrade for both flash and ram.

Both might be, although Paolo makes a good point in noting the 36xx series is end-of-life.

For ATM cards, see "ATM Network Modules" within http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps274/products_relevant_interfaces_and_modules.html

You might need to revise you're IOS, especially to support the ATM modules. Older IOS images (12.1 and 12.2) should fit within your current RAM/FLASH. 12.3 needs 32 MB flash.

Jon's is also correct, the 36xx series is also slower than many of the newer ISRs, but they do offer sufficient performance to drive the ATM links you're likely to connect to them.

As Jon, I too would suggest looking into the newer ISRs, for instance even the 2801 is a bit faster than a 3640 and supports the latest IOS. Investigate whether any trade-in allowance might be obtained.
