I need help on this core and border design/configuration please.

Hi,

I have started in this company for 4 days now and have been given a task that has already been started by two other engineers but they had left due to some issues and now I have been brought/hired and been given this project. I don't have any background on this and no documentation was left after the two engineers had left!

I have attached a drawing that shows what needs to be done and I have no idea of where to start? this is web hosting company.

from what i have gathered, it seems that they use EIGRP as IGP and BGP at the border with two OC3s connecting them to the outside world (Private VLANS also been used for some customers).

Now, They have purchased a Dark fiber ring to connect them to their datacenter using the provider's network as transit. the equipment have changed to accomodate for two new Ethernet- gigi WAN links to get them to their dtacenter - basically connecting them to their upstream provider and BGP will be used. they still want to use EIGRP between the two core 6506 switches (RJ-21)! and BGP on the two Cisco 6509 Switch/Routers.

thats all I know and the time is very short. they are expecting me to follow the same dates that were previously planned and I have to come upto speed with this prgect. this dark Fiber is basically a ring.

Please see the diagram that shows the old or current and the new/Planned infrastrutures. I have not worked with switches/routers with RJ-21 connectors on blades and have no idea of Private VLANs. I have done VLANs a lot of time, L2 and L3 but not private vlans.

I am lost and need help please. I can use all the help that you possibliy can extend to me and I am greatful for that.

I am going to post this in the LAN Routing and Switching Section as well and forgive me if this isn't right!

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike, i am suprise that your company is not setting this up in a test lab first, but since you have been tasked with getting

it up i would start by reviewing all the current configurations on the routers and switches. Since they want to continue to use EIGRP

on the core switches that should be a big problem. Since you have to setup BGP you need to define your neighbors IP's

and which networks you will use. Since you have limited experience I suggest you use the link below and complete the

intro to BGP sections and the BGP challenge labs, I think they will be a big help. unless they are going to let you

hire a consultant you have to learn quickly. HTH

HI AND thanks for getting back to me.

I am looking at the what is called broider router 7513 and see BGP but I don't see any BGP active on the second router! this had surprized me.

on the two switches L2/L3, I don't see any IP routing protocols running and this is a flat network.

for example, when i type show ip route on the core router, i only see many "S" for static and two "C" for directly connected.

I beleive they only think that they have EIGRP.

now, based on the current and new equipment,

I need to put BGP on the 6506s which i don'y have any problems in doing that, I have done BGP and not worried about it but

I don't understand the relatiion that these 6506s at the border will have with the 6509s (inside or behind the 6506s)?

did you look at the diagram, just one page that they had created before me?the one that shows 6506s (4 of them) and 6509s L2/l3 switches?

with BGP running with the provider, I see that they have mentioned EIGRP for all 4 links connecting these 4 6506 together for load balance so all 4 links be hot? this is what I don't understand?

I am attachig this diagram again and really appreciate it if you could sort of helping me understanding what it is that they have drwan and wanted to achive since I think some things are missing here and I need more time to study current and come up with future design but time isn'tgoing tio allow for that. I wanted to do all that I can do before asking them for help.

Thx,

Mike

Hello again,

given the diagram attached, I am planning to have BGP on the two 6506 border speaking to the upstream provider and to other routers in thedatacenter and back to the lower (inside) 6506s running EIGRP and then redistribute between BGP and EIGRP!??

what I don't also know is that what will happen between the eigrp and private vlans? how these two should coexist? i have not done this before.

your thoughts is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Mike

OK, I guess I have made too many replies to myself!

just because i find and learn new information from this place.

the Visio drawing that you see, shows 4 x 6506s, two at each site (two at thislocation and the other two at our datacenter connected through dark fiber as transit from Abovenet), MUX will be used to light up the fiber.

these 4 6506 Siwthes will acts as core routers at both locations and will talk BGP, so they are BGP neighbors, as well and Abovernet.

the two 6506 here will be connected to two 6509 switches as core switch which I need to put EIGRP on them and put my PVLANS.

what has confused me is who can I make One VLAN Interface (for all the PVLANs) to talk to EIGRP? or I have got it wrong altogether?

my guess is that i need to redistribute EIGRP to BGP so make these two routing protocols talk and work.

please see if these information has changed the scenarion at all? can help you, help me for the riht approach and to clear my mind?

i am th eonly one working on this and been here only 4 days1? (today is my 5th day)and still trying to see what is in place.

Also, currently there is no EIGRP running only BGP at one border router with Internap.

Regards,

Mike

hi,

they are not using EIGRP currently. they thught they are but there is no EIGRP configured anywhere on the devices!
