Retrieving physical serial numbers remotely or physically getting the serial numbers and placing them in Cisco Works for future use. Will the serial numbers be retained in Cisco Works even if switch / router is reconfigured?

As long as the chassis remains the same, the serial number data will be the same. That said, many devices are modular, and each module has its own serial number. If those modules are swapped out, then the new modules will have different serial numbers. RME can collect serial number data automatically from most newer devices. Older devices may require you to manually configure the serial number either within RME, or on the device using the "snmp-server chassis-id" command.
