Patch-upgrade questions

I have been asked to get our phone servers all up to date with the latest OS patches (service releases) and have a question that i cannot seem to find an answer to. Our phone system consists of 4 servers (Cisco 78XX MCS) 2 of which are our Call Manager publisher and subscriber and the other 2 are our CRS servers (IPCC Express). The difference is that 2 of them are 7825's and 2 of them are 7845's but they are both running the same OS (OS image, OS Service release, OS upgrade). I was looking at the available service releases on Cisco's site 'http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/callmgr-41' but it looks like those are specific to CCM so I just need to know if I can download those patches and apply them to both the CCM and CRS servers or is here another link that shows the downloads for the CRS servers operating system? I would think that it would be the same but I just wanted to check with the folks around here as I don't think that would merit a TAC case. If anybody knows if I can use the same patches and what not on both the CCM and CRS servers I wouls appreciate it.

Hi Matt,

Great question! The page you were looking at is for SR's and patches for the Callmanager 4.1 Train specifically and would not be loaded on the IPCC servers.

For OS Versions, they generally are the same on both. Here is a clip from the ReadMe for 2000.4.5a. These are always highly recommended reading to verify the required pre-load etc;

Operating System Upgrade 2000.4.5a (win-OS-Upgrade-K9.2000-4-5a.exe)

Release date: 31-JULY-2007

Readme last updated: 30-JULY-2007

Information about This Service Release

The upgrade supports the following Cisco IP Telephony Applications that run on Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server:

***Cisco CallManager and all compatible versions of Cisco IP Interactive Voice Response (IP IVR), Cisco IP Call Center Express (IPCC Express), Cisco IP Queue Manager (IP QM), Cisco Personal Assistant (PA), Cisco Emergency Responder (CER), Cisco Conference Connection (CCC), Cisco MeetingPlace, and Cisco Customer Voice Portal (CVP).

Minimum OS Requirements: (Fresh Install or Upgrade Versions of) - 2000.2.7, 2000.2.7a, 2000.4.1, 2000.4.1b, 2000.4.1c, 2000.4.2, 2000.4.3, 2000.4.3a, 2000.4.4, 2000.4.4a

http://download-sj.cisco.com/cisco/crypto/3DES/voice/cmva/win-OS-Upgrade-K9.2000-4-5a-Readme.htm

These are available (with CCO Login) via;

Unified Communications Manager & Voice Apps Crypto Software

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/apps/tblbld/tablebuild.pl/cmva-3des?sort=release

For IPCC the patches are under> Customer Contact > Cisco Unified Contact Center Express > further down the Software Download page from CCM 4.1 etc

http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/go/Model.x?mdfid=270569179&mdfLevel=Software%20Family&treeName=Customer%20Contact&modelName=Cisco%20Unified%20Contact%20Center%20Express&treeMdfId=268439682

Hope this helps and makes some sense!

Rob - thank you so very much for the information and links getting this cleared up for me. It looks like I can just download the files named 'win-OS-upgrade-k9.2000-XXX.exe' for the operating system patches but for the call manager application patches/updates I would download the files from the site I linked to and for the CRS application patches/updates I would go to the last page that you noted. I think I should be all set to get everything in place so I can setup a time to take our call center down. Thank you again for the pointers.

Hi Matt,

You are most welcome my friend! Be very deliberate when planning these type of upgrades. Make sure to read all the release notes and ReadMe's. Look at the open and resolved caveats/bugs to make sure that fixing one thing doesn't break another. If you are happy with the stability of your setup and are not looking for a new feature or functionality in the SR, try to hold off for a little bit at least and look for trends in the Forums (IPT etc.) to make sure the patch is not a dog ;-)

Don't want to be too paranoid here, but I would recommend making sure to do your homework and take your time with these. You will be happy you did.

Take care,

Rob

Hey Matt,

This is off topic but I thought of you when I came across this doc today. I haven't seen one this good from Cisco in a long time :)

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Software Compatibility Matrix

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/compat/ccmcompmatr.html#wp1569721

Tons of great info!

Take care,

Rob

That does have a lot of really good information and thanks for the advice regarding the updating and patching. I'm usually very cautious when placing new software (even MS patches) on any machine but especially production machines because i have been bitten a couple of times by patches breaking machines that were working perfectly fine before. Thank you again for the pointers and documents.

Hi Matt,

Good stuff! I got to thinking after my first post that I had made this all seem rather benign (which we know it is not!) I'm glad to hear about your methodology ...slow but sure :)

Take care,

Rob
