Admin Distance v. Matched bits?

In a routing decision which takes priority, matched number of bits or administrative distance?

Hi Eric,

You if you have same routes pointing towards two different destinations one with higher AD and another with lower AD, only one route would be installed the one with lower AD.

So there is no question of priority.

If you have two routes which are not same [implementing the concept of longest match] one with higher AD and another with lower AD, then both the links would be installed in the routing table and the one with logest match would be selected.

Hi,

In brief routes are preferred via the following sequence:

1.Longest match (more specific is prefered).

2.Lowest AD (if multiple routes from multiple routing protocols - having the same subnetmask).

3.Lowest metric (if multiple routes from the same protocol - having the same subnetmask).
