Hi All,

We have Sup 2/MSFC 2 running on the Catalyst and this wont detect the line cards. Please find the show commands below:

Firstly you don't have an SFM (switch Fabric Module) so all your linecards will share the 32Gbps classic bus.

Secondly the WS-X6148A-GE-TX is positioned as a wiring closet module ie. you probably wouldn't want to be using this module for a server farm. It really depends on what you want to use the switch for.

Not sure what you mean about negative performance. As i say you are limited by the available switch fabric.

What are you intending to use the module for and are you intending to install any other modules and what would these be used for ?

You need a minimum of CatOS 8.4(1) to support this card. Please see attached release notes for details

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the Input but I am curious about the jumbo Frames support. All we are cocerned about is a regular 1518 byte frame support. What difference will it actually make.

Thanks & Regards

You've confused me now. What do you mean about jumbo frames support and how is this related to the card not being recognised ?

Jon

hi jon,

Sorry. May be i am not asking you the right question.

Lets say i upgrade the catos on the switch to support the line card.

The Line card - WS - X6148 A - GE - TX has got the Jumbo frame support but all we will do is a regular frame on this switch.

Will it make any difference using this line card in the switch.

THANKS & REGARDS

SUBRA

If you don't need the jumbo support then it comes down to the question of what other alternative modules you can use.

Do you want PoE and do you want 10/100/1000 interface capability.

Jon

Hi Jon,

We dont need POE as well. But we are planning to use the same line card in that case do i have any negative impact on the performance or is it any good.

thanks and regards

Jon

Hi,

Thanks for the Input. We are planning to put 2 of the line cards and create vlans for a server farm. No other modules will be installed except for these.

Thanks & regards

These modules are classic modules so they only connect to the 32Gbps shared bus. So you have 2 x WS-X6148A-GE-TX modules both connecting to the shared 32Gbps bus. So you need to factor this into the equation. For example if you were to fully populate these modules with server you would be very heavily oversubscribed.

It all depends on how many servers you intend to connect and what throughput you need for each server.

It is worth saying again that these modules are not really designed for server farms. If you connect to these servers over a WAN then the WAN speed might be the limiting factor but within a campus environment it may very well not work as you hoped.

Jon

Hi Jon,

Thanks again. We will have only a Handful of Servers connecting and hence it shouldnt be problem.

Thanks & Regards
