7942 wideband handset causing "muffled" audio

We just rolled out several 7942s as replacements for old 7940Gs, and most of the users are complaining about poor sound quality. It seems to be related to the wideband handset, since it improves when we swap in a standard handset.

We are running CUCM 4.1(3)sr6a with phone load 8.3.3s.

I assume we are running into CSCso71668, but from the bug details, it isn't clear to me whether this is something that will be fixed, or whether this is the way Cisco intended for these phones to work, and the users are just not used to the way it sounds.

Is anyone else experiencing this, and are there any other workarounds?

A colleague of mine just called me about this and he talked to a couple of people at Cisco and this is a known issue that they are addressing. You can actually put the 7940 handset on there and it sounds proper but Cisco is telling people they have not tested that and you might blow someone's ear out and they don't want to be liable
