VoIP on VLAN 1

Does Cisco VoIP make any special use of VLAN 1 on switches? I have a collegue that says VoIP uses VLAN 1 for control and signaling. I can't find anything on the Cisco site that supports this.

vlan 1 is the default data vlan, if you configure a phone on a voice vlan then all the signaling will be on that vlan, not on vlan 1

No, cisco does not make any special use of vlan 1.

in fact, it is a general best practice to not use vlan 1 for any connections where possible.

(access and security reasons for the most part)

VoIP does not specifically use vlan1 for call signaling. VoIP will use whatever vlan your phone or CCM/CME is assigned to for call signaling.

It is best to create subinterfaces on your FastEthernet interface of the router to segregate your data and voice traffic. (or create SVIs on an L3 switch such as a 3560 w/EMI IOS)
