2801 Router - need to add another FE

I have a 2801 router. Using FE0/0 for outside, using FE0/1 for inside. We added another provider who is giving us a CAT5 handoff (Bringing fiber into our premise, then they have a 3750, we will hook into 3750). I looked for a network module and found this one-Cisco Etherswitch 4, but the interfaces can't be assigned an IP...do they have a FE interface WIC card..the 2801 doesn't support any network modules...

In short, No.

A WIC/VIC/VWIC does not support an FE routed interface.

What you'll have to do in this case, unless you buy a new router, is to get a switch and plug one of your existing FEs into the new switch.

Setup the FE on the router to support dot1q vlans and remove the Interface configuration and create two subinterfaces on the FE.

Put your existing FE interface configuration on one of the subinterfaces and put the newly required FE configuration on the other subinterface.

Setup the new switch to support both vlans and create a dot1q trunk on the port the router FE plugs into.

Finally, plug the new CAT5 the provider gives you into a port on the new switch.

Configure that switch port for the vlan created on the router for the new routed subinterface.

At that point, you should be able to ping from your original subnet(vlan) to the providers next hop.

(if you got the vlans and ip addressing/subnetting correct)

Please see the following link for 2800 subinterface config info:

If you install the Cisco Etherswitch 4 you should be able to configure a VLAN and use one of the Etherswitch ports to connect to the 3750 and the VLAN should allow it to be routed.

Actually you can use an HWIC-1FE:

But I think using a switch and subinterfaces is also practical.

As you've noted in your original post, the 2801 doesn't support any network modules, which eliminates the various Ethernet modules.

Paolo's reference to the HWIC-1FE satisfies your requirement, don't miss to consider "Note: For the HWIC-1FE and HWIC-2FE the minimum level is Cisco IOS 12.4(15)T."

With regard to using an external switch and VLAN trunks to the router, you wouldn't necessary have to deploy another switch, depending on the cooperation of the provider with the 3750, it might be done there, or it might be done on whatever switches your two interfaces currently connect to.

One last consideration, a 2801 doesn't really have the performance capacity to sustain 100 Mbps full duplex. Depending on the bandwidth of the existing external path, and what the new and additional external path bandwidth might also add, the 2801 might be overwhelmed. Besides having the option to upgrade to a faster router, depending on your feature needs, keep in mind one of the L3 switches might be a better choice.
