Hi Masood,

If you are using a windows machine; the TFTP command will do the job and same goes for the cisco IOS.

You really dont need a specific TFTP client to upload or download TFTP files.

Thanks

I use Windows XP professional, so how can I use it without a TFTP client to upload a new imgae on this switch?

Thx,

Masood

shouldn't it be done from the switch/router prompt?

I would need the DOS commands to do this please.

Thx,

Masood

Masood,

You should use a boot string. Here's an example below.

boot system flash bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF13.bin

I recommend tftpd32. It is a great TFTP server, and it does handle large image sizes.

Try 3Cdaemon from 3Com, make sure you get version 2 rev 10 (that's the most recent version).

3Cdaemon will support file uploads greater than 32 Meg .... like you'd need for the ISR routers.

It also has an FTP client / server and a syslog server in the same application ... DO NOT keep it running any longer than necessary (like a permanent application) because there are some security issues.

Good Luck

Scott

and can be seen in the show bootflash below. I did boot system flash: and reload but still came up with the old version.

have you rebooted the switch? Can you please do a "show bootvar" and paste the output on here?

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 08:49

here is the bootvar output:

bdr2-ash-irides#sh bootvar

BOOT variable = ,1;

CONFIG_FILE variable =

BOOTLDR variable =

Configuration register is 0x2102

Standby is not present.

i uploaded the image and set the system boot flash:

the, reload

but the old image still showing up shown in the sh ver above!??

IS THIS SWITCH DIFFERENT? OR I HAVEN'T DONE SOMETHING RIGHT?

PLEASE ADVISE.

THX,

MASOOD

Masood,

You need to have a boot string in your config so that your switch will boot the IOS that you want it to boot. Please follow the example as posted earlier, and save the config, then past the show bootvar out again. Do you have redundant SUP engines?

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:03

this is what I get:

bdr2-ash(config)#boot system flash ?

WORD System image filename

bdr2-ash(config)#boot system flash

should I type bootdisk:?

it has disk0: and disk1: but when I try ot writ to them, I get error!!??

Pls advise.

Thx,

Masood

I ran through this same senario uploading an image to a 6513 SUP 720 some time ago. The solution was to use FTP instead of TFTP. Just load the Windows FTP client to your PC, put the image file in the c:\inetpub\ftproot directory...I think and you are all set. Make sure the ftp directory has read permissions. Always use FTP instead of TFTP when available. Although FTP requies authentication Cisco will simly use the anyonomous automatically.

Brandon,

I have loaded the image now but the switch keeps reloading to the old image.

in my earlier post I postd the sho bootvar and sh version.

I have tried to set the system boot to flash: and reload but same result!

any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Masood

mbroberson1 Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:00

Don't forget to remove any old boot variable statements, and set the new boot variable for both the sup, and supbootflash to be from he disk0: which is usually the location, assuming this is the location where you copied the image.

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:06

I tftp the image to flash.

disk0: and disk1: give me error.

how can I clean the old boot variavle statements?

Please advise.

masood

Mark Yeates Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:09

You will want to take out the old bootstrings. Where did you TFTP the IOS on the switch? Your boot string needs to reflect it's location on the switch.

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:28

to flash

Here I see the right image in the sh run:

boot system flash

boot system flash:

boot system flash :

boot system flash s72033-pk9sv-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin

logging snmp-authfail

but I still see this in the sh version:

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software

IOS (tm) s72033_rp Software (s72033_rp-IPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.2(18)SXF10, R

ELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

SXF10 is not the right one but: this one is below:

s72033-pk9sv-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin

I don't kno wwhat else is there that I had not done!!??

Regards

Masood

Mark Yeates Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:37

copy and paste below into

no boot system flash

no boot system flash:

no boot system flash :

no boot system flash s72033-pk9sv-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin

boot system flash bootdisk:s72033-pk9sv-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin

copy run start

now reload the switch.

Mark

mbroberson1 Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:12

You will need to format the disk0: and disk1: CFCards. This usually can take a few minutes for each card and will remove all files and any corrupted files on the disk. You may also have to perform a squeeze on the CFCards to reclaim any unused space.

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:17

I can see the new image in the flash. or bootvar but it just doesn't load to that image.

i have tried all thos eocmmands boot system new image

boot system flash and reloaded many times.

still swithc doesn't come up with this new image!

Pls advie.

Thx,

masood

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:23

I did format both disks.

here is the what I have in bootflash:

bdr2-ash#show bootflash

Please advise,

Thx,

Masood

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:11

Ok,

here is the new bootvar output showing my new image but the sho versiob still shows the old image:

bdr2-ash#sh bootvar

BOOT variable = ,1;flash:,12;:,1;s72033-pk9sv-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin,1;

CONFIG_FILE variable =

BOOTLDR variable =

Configuration register is 0x2102

Standby is not present.

pls advise.

Masood

Mark Yeates Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:18

If you can please post your config, or just the parts with the bootstring. Below is an example of a working bootstrung.

6509-Core#sh bootvar

BOOT variable = bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF13.bin,1;

CONFIG_FILE variable =

BOOTLDR variable =

Configuration register is 0x2102

Mark Yeates Wed, 05/14/2008 - 09:21

your bootstring does not reflect the location of the IOS...ie flash:, disk0: etc

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 13:40

I am sure that I did specify! for some reason it just doesn't take it.

can you please send me the command so that I insert it again and see what happens. I might have missed something for sure!

Regards,

Masood

Mark Yeates Wed, 05/14/2008 - 14:00

no boot system flash

no boot system flash:

no boot system flash :

no boot system flash s72033-pk9sv-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin

boot system flash bootflash:s72033-pk9sv-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin

copy run start

now reload the switch.

Also see the attachment posted by mbroberson1.

That is a great explanation of how to upgrade an IOS on a 6500.

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 14:22

I did read that and thanks.

I executed the commands remotely and reloaded the switch but it has not come back up. it's now 10 minutes!

pls advise.

Thx,

Masood

Mark Yeates Wed, 05/14/2008 - 14:47

Is the switch in rommon? Is there an error message. Try to type boot, and see if it does or produces an error.

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 15:04

when I did all of those no boot flash, etc. commands and di dit fresh pointing to the new image, wr mem and reloaded the switch remotely, it didn't come back up.

i need to get to the switch and console to see why it didn't come back up?

What did you mean by being in the RMON mode?

please advise.

Regards,

Masood

Mark Yeates Wed, 05/14/2008 - 15:08

Yes you will want to console into it to see if it did not load any IOS. If you have a compact flash card with the IOS just in case you don't have a valid IOS on the switch to bring it out of rommon.

m-abooali Wed, 05/14/2008 - 20:42

it seems that both compact flash cards are either bad or the slot are bad since I wasn't able to write to them, the switch wasn't recognizing them!

this is a refurbished box that they have ourchased and has made my life a hell.

I really don't know what to do if I couldn't bring it up? is there any way to set this to factory default and then past the lasted configuration on it? I have the config saved on my laptop.

Pls. advise.

Regards,

Masood
