VTP transparent switch is one which has its own vlan database & doesnt synchronise from vtp server. you can create, modify & delete vlans on this switch. It also doesnt send any local vlan advertisements to other vtp servers or clients.

Lets say there is big network domain with many switches. But 1 switch is under the administration of a new network engineer. So senior admin may assign this transparent switch to the new guy so that any changes done on this switch by the newbie doesnt affect all other switches in the domain. this is just 1 example of many in practical scenarios.

Hi

it can also be used in a scenario where you have multiple switches -

switch 1 - has vlan 1, 3 and 5

switch 2 has vlan 1 and 6

switch 3 has 1, 3 and 5.

You do not want to have vlan 3 and 5 in the second switch. Now switch 1 is connected to switch 3 via switch 2, not directly and you want the VLAN database to be replicated on swithc 3 which is client from switch 1 which is server but not on switch 2. you can configure switch 2 to be a transparent switch so that it can forward the VTP information to switch 3 and not make those changes in its own database.

hi sunil

if vlan 1 on switch has something changed and

vlan1 is server and switch 2 is transparent mode will switch 2 modify its vlan1 info.

also when new switch comes what is its default mode transparent or server??????????

please reply

thanks

Hi,

You mean to say, if VLAN 1 on server is changed then whtether switch 2 transparent will modify its VLAN 1.

The answer is no. Switc hbeing in transparent mode will change the VLAN database only when you make the changes locally on the transparent switch itself not on any other switch.

When the switch boots it boots in VTP server mode.

thanks for reply,

so when switch is in transparent mode and we

do reboot command it will come as server mode?

or you mean to say New switch is by default

server mode ???????

thanks sunil

Your first statement is correct mahesh.

thanks for reply

so all new switches by default come in

server mode?????????

Hi Sunil

I have a doubt in your statement...If i configure a switch as Transparnt in my VTP domain and once it completes a power cycle will it become VTP server, then it will accept all VTP msg from server and it incorporates the change in its dtabase. Then it will a create problems.....what will be solutions for this

Regards

Bava

When you configure the vtp mode of switch it doesnt default after a reload. so a transparent switch would remain transparent even after a reload.

Thanks for you reply

good to learn

a 'vtp transparent' switch will not listen to vtp acknowledgements from a 'vtp server' but they will forward vtp advertisements across their trunks.
