subnetting

Hi,

Can I use the following IP address between two router for WAN link? I know both are diff. subnet

192.168.1.1/24

192.168.1.24/16

This is interview question.

Hi

No u cannot use them as point to point connections require the interfaces to be on common subnet.

if you use the ip unnumbered feature for your wan interfaces, the IP's don't need to be on the same subnet.

The tricky part, in this instance, is the /24 is a subnet of the /16, also the individual IP addresses are valid host addresses in both address blocks. So, from an IP address perspective, they might be able to communicate from host to host. Whether they could be used on router interfaces for WAN link would further depend the type of WAN link and how you intended to use them. (I've seen something similar, intentionally done, and work, on Ethernet.)
