GSS redundancy not working

Hi all,

i have two GSS 4490 series...

one is configured as GGSM Pri and the other as GSSM sec.

However when the pri goes down(simulated by taking down the link) the sec is not taking over as the primary... the sec gss status still shows as standby.

Is there any keepalive configuration requried for this.

----Tasks done----

1. enables gssm standby on the sec.

2. the Pri gui shows the sec device as online.

3. recahablility is there bwteen the two GSS.

4. GSS-communication is enabled on the eth0 interfaces of both the devices.

but still the redundancy does not work.

pls help me.

Hi,

The standby will not automatically switch role - it needs to be manually configured using the CLI command "gssm standby-to-primary".

It's best to read the chapter "Changing the GSSM Role in the GSS Network" in the administration guide first, and also have a backup, before doing this.

Thanks for the reply,

THis means we have to be manually change the role on the standby, when the primary goes donw. in the live environment there should be some way in which we can make this happen automatically.

Was wondering whether the standby is polling the primary to see whether it is alive..

if the primary is not alive, the standby should come up as the primary.

Else there is not poing is configuring it as standby, if we were to manually switch over.

Hi,

There is continuous communication between all GSS devices in the network, at a minimum they share a common load-balancing config and they may share other information (global stickiness for example).

If you lose communication between the primary and standby it shouldn't affect your load balancing operation at all, however if you need to make any changes, and the primary is offline, then you would need to manually promote the secondary to primary.

It's all explained in the administration guide, with notes as to why and in what circumstances you might want to promote a device.
