The following situation Privare vlan can be implemented.

Pass-Through DMZ

External DMZ

VPN Concentrator in Parallel to Firewall

Most of the time it is used for DMZ.

I use it on our backup network. Usually servers that are in different networks share a common backup network. You don't want the servers talking to each other over their backup NIC so you put them in private LANs so they can only communicate with the backup server.

As vman1976nj said the same can be used in datacenter where you have colocated servers from diffrent clients.
