dot 1q on ethernet interface

Hi all, I saw a config of one of our isp's routers, it has got an interface

int fa 0/1.1000

what would they use this for ?

That is what you call a sub-interface and will be used for ROAS (Router-on-a-stick). Look up - configuring ROAS (Router-on-a-stick) and you will find all the information you need regarding your question.

I dont understand why they would need this as the router has got no connection to my lan via a trunk. its simply a wan access router that connects to an e1 line, any ideas ?
