actually rd is used to make ipv4 route to look like vpnv4 route. IN english dictionary if you check the meaning of import means that you are getting something from outside and export means you are sending something to the others. The same concept follows in mpls, when you are sendning any route to RR you are attching an extended community that is RT and exporting that route to the RR, The same way the PE who is looking for the route with same community has to use the import command to install the route in the vrf table.

sorry I forget to tell about the overlapping of ip address, this can be done with the help of RD. The main concern is that RD should should be unique for a VPN in the SP cloud.

Let say we have two vpn A & B having same ip address that is 10.1.1.1 but it can be made unique b adding RD value with the ip address and RD should be unique thru out the cloud for a VPN.

65000:1:10.1.1.1 (VPN A)

65000:2:10.1.1.1 (VPN B)
