Anyone have, or can easily get a list of options you can enable for logging on cisco switches in IOS and catos?

Hi,

Logging on Cisco Routers/Switches can be done in one of these 4 methods:

1.Console logging - Enabled by default ("logging console" under the global configuration) - The logging will pop-up to the terminal when you are connected via console.

2.Monitor logging - Disabled by default - The current terminal line (to the vty (telnet) sessions when "terminal monitor" is enabled - to disable use "terminal no monitor" - Exec enable mode not configuration mode) - pop-up logging on your screen like in the first method but it is not enabled by default (needs the "terminal monitor").

3.Buffer logging - The router internal logging buffer (use "logging buffered" then "show logging" to display the logs saved in the logging buffer (local RAM Buffer), but the main drawbacks here is the limited size of the buffer (retains only the newest Information) and that the log is lost if the router reloads since it is in the RAM - the last constrain can work around by saving the logging buffered to the flash via the logging file command).

4.Syslog logging - The syslog server (use "logging ") the most preferred method, its only drawback is when the connectivity is lost with the syslog server.

On CatOS it is nearly identical:

4003 (enable) set logging ?

buffer Set logging buffer size

console Set logging console (enable/disable)

history Set logging history table size

level Set logging level

server Set logging server

session Set logging session (enable/disable)

timestamp Enable or disable logging timestamp

BR,

Mohammed Mahmoud.

Hi Mohammed,

Do you know (or someone knows) why several of my Cisco WS-C6509-E does not support "logging origin-id" command?

Cisco documentation explains that this command introduced in 12.2(15)T, and integrated into 12.2(33)SXH

switchb(config)#logging ?
Hostname or A.B.C.D  IP address of the logging host
  buffered             Set buffered logging parameters
buginf               Enable buginf logging for debugging
cns-events           Set CNS Event logging level
  console              Set console logging parameters
count                Count every log message and timestamp last occurance
  esm                  Set ESM filter restrictions
  event                Global interface events
exception            Limit size of exception flush output
facility             Facility parameter for syslog messages
  filter               Specify logging filter
  history              Configure syslog history table
host                 Set syslog server IP address and parameters
  ip                   IP configuration
listen               MWAM remote console and logging listen enabler
monitor              Set terminal line (monitor) logging parameters
on                   Enable logging to all enabled destinations
rate-limit           Set messages per second limit
  reload               Set reload logging level
source-interface     Specify interface for source address in logging transactions
  system               enable/disable System Event Log
trap                 Set syslog server logging level
userinfo             Enable logging of user info on privileged mode enabling

Thank you Rajat,

That´s exactly the point that I just want to confirm.

What should be the minimum IOS version that I require on my WS-C6509-E equipments to support "logging origin-id" command?

Cisco documentation says that this command was introduced in 12.2(15)T, and integrated into 12.2(33)SXH.

My Cisco switches have 12.2(33)SXH5 IOS version.......:(...and they do not support "logging origin-id" (as shown previously).

switchb#sh ver

Any helpful?...It would be very appreciated.
