Is there a way to use the telephone interface to add names or character strings to historic phone numbers? Right now I have to use the CLI to make a directory entry command under telephony-service but this is no good for the customer to have access to.

Hi aciscolook,
You can have the user or admin login to CME through the web interface to change/add directory listings.

thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
I went through all the steps to set this up with an edited xml template for the customer admin GUI.
Works fine, but i'd like to get rid of the 'extensions' and 'phones' submenus altogether under the 'configure' heading.
All i need is for customer to add directory entries and view call history.
