these are the release notes for IOS version on 6500 switch. Select the relevant one and when the doc loads in the "Table of Contents" at the top select the "13-Slot Chassis" link. It will then show exactly which modules you cannot use in slots 1 - 8.

Slots 1 - 8 in the 6513 chassis provide 1 x 20Gbps connection to the switch fabric.

Slots 9 -13 will provide 2 x 20Gbps connection to the switch fabric. The WS-X6748-GE-TX supports 2 x 20Gbps connections to the switch fabric and hence needs to go into slots 9 - 13.

And how about WS-X6708-10GE , slot 1-8 didn' like this either. What can we actually put in slot1-8 then?

Jon Marshall Thu, 06/05/2008 - 09:12

Sorry, should have said. Yes the WS-X6708-10GE also has 2 x 20Gbps connections so it needs to be in slots 9 - 13 as well.

Most of the 6500 modules will be fine in slots 1 - 8 (note slots 7 & 8 are for Supervisor). You have to do a bit of hunting to find out which modules need to go into which slots. Attached is a link to all the relevant modules for 6500 switches. if you look at the data sheet for your module it usually says if there are any restrictions as to which slot it can go in on a 6513.
