Cisco Unity install

shovels3

Hi,

We are looking at installing a Cisco unity server in the coming weeks.

We may not have an exchange server during initial install as this is being planned for at a later date.

Can we install Cisco Unity as a standalone voicemail platform or do we require an install of exchange before we can do the install?

thanks in advance

Hi Conor,

Unity does require Exchange but if you are using VMO (Voicemail Only) and not UM (Unified Messaging) you can install Exchange "on-box" with Unity. Here is a good recent thread with some links and great advice from Tommer,Ginger, Randy and Trae (sp?) from Cisco;

http://forum.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&forum=Unified%20Communications%20and%20Video&topic=Unified%20Communications%20Applications&topicID=.ee835d2&fromOutline=&CommCmd=MB%3Fcmd%3Ddisplay_location%26location%3D.2cbfed10

Hope this helps!

Rob

Hi,

Just to add a note to the valuable info from Rob, if you ever need to use/apply a mixed Voice Messaging/Unified Messaging for Unity 4.2 and 5.x, you can check this link:

Regards,

- adrián.

Thanks both for swift respones.

Is there any problems with integrating with an exchange server down the line if required?

Would you have an preference for either method of install?

Thanks again

if no Exchange is installed Unity will not start, that is one of the main requirements so until you don't have the Exchange you may try only UMR mode, but not the full unity functionality.

Unity requires the exchange connection to start all the major services.

Hi,

If we never use Exchange what impact will this have on VM, etc

Thanks

basically it will be on UMR mode, the HDD will fill, not all the features will be available since there is no Exchange, not to mention that probably that won't be supported because you're not matching the requirements from the HW and SW guide for unity

Does that mean also no TAC Support

Can you have different unity server registered to the the same exchange without any issue?

If you were to update this an add an exchange server at a later date would this involve of configuration changes or a full rebuild?

Unfortunately yes, the documentation is very specific on what SW and HW is needed for a solution to be supported and with Unity it's mandatory to have a Message Store (Exchange or Domino), the UMR is supposed to be an state on which you can only be for certain time to provide basic functionality to the users while you fix the issues with the message store.

you can change the message store if needed, just look the unity reconfiguration guide for your version. does not require a rebuild, just to run the MSCW.

Could we do the following if this is the case?

Install Exchange on the Unity server as part of the existing domain or would it be better to run exchange on a seperate server?

it depends on which unity/exchange version and whether you want VMO or UM

Yes, you can install exchange on box unity but thats only if you are not using exchange 2007 as this does not support "on box" with unity.

Best practise is to have exchange on a seperate server, so you dont just have a single point of failure in your network.
