Restricting bandwidth usage on Switch port at any time

Hi All,

My client has a 3560G-24Port switch (Ver12.2(44)) as core. Now we are planning on moving backup server to this location where backup will run from remote sites to the servers at nights and will take lot of BW. 3560G location has a Gig P2P to another main location from where we have DS3 to different satellite offices.

Now, my question is..

1.will it possible to cut/restrict the bandwidth usage for the ports where backup servers connected to certain amount..?

2. if possible, can this be doable on time frame basis (lets say 10PM-3AM )

3. Also, will it possible to restrict the Bandwidth for backup job to certain limit on P2P gig link..?

Please suggest

Thank you

MS

For your questions 1 and 3, the 3560G with your software version offers a couple of options to limit bandwidth. Limiting bandwidth could be done either via policing or via using a port shaper. See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3560/software/release/12.2_44_se/configuration/guide/swqos.html for more information.

For your question #2, believe it may be possible using EEM that's available in 12.2(40)SE (IP Services) and later.

PS:

Another approach, instead of limiting the backup bandwidth, place it into a shared queue with the minimal bandwidth guarantee for such traffic. This would allow it to use all available bandwidth, not adversely impact non-backup traffic, and doesn't have to be tied to a time setting.

Thank you.. will check on this..
