Can anyone register at Cisco.com and be able to download the SDM or SDM Demo? Or do you have to own a router and/or service contract? Regards, Bob

Robert,

Last time I checked it is a free download, as long as you have a cisco.com account. Here is a link to the download.

Mark

Thanks for the info. I have it downloaded, and the demo downloaded, but no luck getting the demo to run. I downloaded & extracted the SDM files. I downloaded and extracted the SDM demo files. When I open SDM and type 1127.0.0.1 in the address space, it says it can't find the router. Suggestions?

Bob

Bob,

I don't think that the demo will help you much. You need the actual SDM software to install on either your PC, router or both. Heres the link to the application.

Mark,

I have the SDM software installed. I'm new to this, but the book I'm reading says the SDM demo runs in conjunction with the SDM itself - i.e. it acts maybe as a psuedo router for the SDM to communicate with?

It says to install both, then type loopback addr after running SDM, and it should load up and run the SDM screens....but it doesn't.

I am not familiar with the demo version of SDM. I know it does act as a virtual router with SDM installed. I would just use SDM on your router using it's IP address.

I would if I had a router...Mark, I've been trying to learn a bit about networking in general, complete beginner, doing it for personal interest. I don't have a router, don't work in IT, but DO have Todd Lammle's book about Cisco beginning networking. I was hoping to be able to use the SDM demo in conjunction with SDM to get a feel for SDM. That was all....

Bob

My apologizes. I have misunderstood your question completely. Make sure you are using the loopback http IP address of http://127.0.0.1 and make sure you don't have any PC firewalls blocking the SDM demo access.

AHA - we're getting somewhere!

I did use the loopback address, but what should I set for the firewall? Or just turn the firewall off completely? This stuff is really neat btw....

Bob

I don't know what firewall you are using to be able to help you with that. You can temporarily disable the firewall while using the demo, and then enable it when your done.

Mark,

I'm using windows vista security center firewall, turned it off. But still, same msg: it says 'the hostname or IP address provided is not a valid router or address is not reachable.'

Wonder if it's not compatible with vista? I'm using IE 7.0.

Bob

Unfortunately I cannot validate if either are compatible. If possible try to use a XP machine to run the demo. I do know that there are some work arounds required to use SDM using vista. I personally don't use windows.

Thanks for the help anyway. What do you use if not windows?

Bob

Personal preference thats all. I have to use windows at the office, but use Linux at home. I just prefer Linux over windows, even though there are some times when you have to have windows for some applications. Sorry I couldn't have been able to help1
