CATALYST 6000 - DIFFERENT CONFIG REGISTER ON MSFC2 AND SUPERVISOR

This info is from a Catalyst 6000 supervisor 2 WITH Cat6k MSFC2 daughterboard. I have 2 questions.

1. The config-register is 0x2102 on MSFC2 and 0x2021 on the supervisor.

Q: How do I change 0x2021 to 0x2102 ?

2. When I reload the sysstem it starts up from sup-bootflash. show version shows System image file is "bootflash:c6sup22-dsv-mz.121-8a.E5" . I have checked the md5 checksum on the image in slot0 so I know it is OK.

Q: Can the reason for not reloading on slot0 (as the BOOTVAR dictates) be 0x2021 on the supervisor ?

Thanks

Simon.

hi!

Confreg 0x2101 will boor the image in sys ROM and ignore the boot commands. You can change the confreg for the SP from the ROMMON mode. Reload, issue a break and go to rommon.

then :

rommon 3 > priv

You now have access to the full set of monitor commands.

Warning: some commands will allow you to destroy your

configuration and/or system images and could render

the machine unbootable.

rommon 5 > confreg

Configuration Summary

(Virtual Configuration Register: 0x2)

enabled are:

[ 0 ] break/abort has effect

[ 1 ] console baud: 9600

rommon 6 > sync

rommon 7 > reset

Resetting .......

=== or ======

rommon 2 > confreg 0x2102

You must reset or power cycle for new config to take effect

Either of these will set the config reg to 0x

I wondered if I had to break to rommon to change the configregister for SP. I understand I have. thanks for the tip to enter 0x2102 directly by rommon 2 > confreg 0x2102. I always used confreg and so on.

apparently it does not matter what the SP config-register is as long as the router config-register is 0x2102. regards Simon

Hi!

To clarify on the issue, I'll give an instance when I ended up having 2 diff config registers on SP and RP (msfc).

I changed the reg to 0x2142 from the IOS CLI. Then during the reload, I issiued a break to enter rommon and then changed the config reg back to 0x2102. But the image still loaded without the startup and then realized that the confreg @ RP was still the same. So you need to change the config reg directly from IOS to make it reflect on SP as well as the RP.

You can also issue a break after " changing /passing control to the route processor" The rommon that you get now is the RP rommon and not the SP rommon. the change in the config reg here will reflect the confreg of the RP(MSFC).

eg.

*Jun 13 09:40:59.504: %PFREDUN-6-ACTIVE: Initializing as ACTIVE processor for this switch

Firmware compiled 06-Jun-08 04:09 by integ Build [100]

*Jun 13 09:41:09.335: %OIR-SP-6-CONSOLE: Changing console ownership to route processor
