We offer wholesale Internet and I want to limit customers to what they paid for, what is best approach of of limiting to what they paid for? Is it rate-limiting, policing, or shaping and what effect does each command have of the customers.

hi!

Rate-limiting is the same as policing.Actually rate-limiting using MQC is policing. Pilicing defines a strict cut-off and anything that crosses the cutoff- is dropped. Shaping on the other hand queues the excess traffic. So it can be helpful; for bursty traffic but if traffic comes at a higher rate continuously, the excess packets will be tail dopped in the queue and will have same effect as policing.

Shaping is usually a egress feature, and service-provider will usually resort to policing on the ingress ports.
