2610 suddenly boots into ROMMON

A week ago or so I tried xferring a new IOS image unto my 2610; but it was too big for the flash memory I had installed. I got an error message that it had (naturally) aborted the TFTP transfer; except I thought that meant it would have left the old IOS image intact. I now believe it didn't do that, because today I booted up the 2610 and I got this:

"tftp" isn't one of the available commands in ROMMON mode so I wonder how I can go about getting the old IOS image in place back there.

You'll have to XModem an image to flash. Here are the directions.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps259/products_tech_note09186a008015bfac.shtml

Hope that helps

Yeah, see, I just tried that; and it took 1hr and 15mins to do the download over Xmodem and at the very end, HyperTerm said "Transfer cancelled by remote system" and the 2610 said "Truncated image received - aborting download..."

AAAARRRGGGHH

What's it going to take to fix this thing?

Thanks folks.

Alekseev - I tried the tftpdnld command you recommended, and after the tftp xfer completed, I got this error msg:

TFTP flash copy: Error, image size (3610952) mismatches netsize (3309568).

rommon 14>

The "netsize" number (3309568) is the same one my TFTP server software pegs the file at. What went wrong?

maybe you have damaged IOS on you tftp server.

What IOS do you have?

Show me the full name.

You should verify the MD5 hash from Cisco's site and what the image reports on your PC.

Hi Colin,

Your IOS is corrupt, please follow the 2nd post on how to upload using XMODEM. This will usually take atleast 45 mins.

Regards,

Justin Brenton

Justin-

My IOS is just fine :)

Hi Alekseev

The IOS image is called c2600-i-mz.120-3T

Collin - how do I verify the MD5 hash? (Can I even do that with an IOS Image that's only stored on my PC anyway? Obviously the router's CLI isn't an option here)

Here's a freebie that should help.

http://www.blisstonia.com/software/WinMD5/

When you download the IOS image, it will show you what the MD5 hash is for the image, just make sure it matches what you have on your PC. Attached is a screenshot of what you need to look for.

For future reference, you can check the image from IOS with the following-

RTR# verify /md5 [file to be verified]
