Hi netpros,
A customer is looking to upgrade from CCM 4.1 running on windows 2000 to CCM6.X running on linux. My VoIP knowledge is very limited at the moment and so I would appreciate your input in regards to best practices and some links that could help me in carrying out this task. I had a look at the below link but it does not seem to go in to much detail.

Your help is much appreciated

basically cisco has a DMA tool that will extract all the database info on 4.1. Also take a backup. Then pop in the 6.1 media, and it will start the installer, one of the first questions is if you would like to import DMA data, say yes. follow on screen promprts and walla! upgraded :) Also, don't forget licensing before you do this!...
I know there is a specific link to the process but I can;t find it maybe someone else will find it..

Great ... thanks,
What about the Upgrade utility tool. Do I still need to run this on the current servers even though they will be replaced by new appliances ..?

Yes you should run it to make sure the DB is good before extracting the DMA Data. Also to make sure your backups are valid!

Hi Fernando,
Just to add the link that Chad was referring to in his good answer;
Data Migration Assistant User Guide Release 6.0(1)
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/dma/6_0_1/dmaug601.html
If at all possible I would go straight to 6.1(2) as this is a very good (less bugs) build :)
Hope this helps!

I have been already looking at the document. what about Unity integration ? currently they have Unity 4.2. it is not currently integrated with Exchange for voice mail storage. Could migrating to 6.2.1 affect the integration with currently mail system on any way ..?

just make sure you install a compatible TSP with CUCM 6.X on the Unity server
SCCP Compatibility Matrix: Cisco Unity, the Cisco Unity-CM TSP, Cisco Unified CM, and Cisco Unified CM Express

Keep in mind too that there is a good chance you may need to upgrade your servers too. Not all servers designed for 4.x are capable of doing 6.X
06-25-2008 04:51 AM
What version of 6.X (6.0, 6.1) are you planning to migrate to?
06-25-2008 04:12 PM
We will be migrating to version 6.1.2

I just upgraded from 4.1.3 to 6.1.2, I also upgraded from IPCC 3.5.4 to 5.0.2 and Unity from 4.1 to 5.01 and so far have had not any major issues. I setup the new servers in a new dmz on our firewall so that no one had access to it until we actually converted. Then I changed the firewall rules to allow everyone access to the new server and limited access to the old server.
With the exception of a couple of minor problems everything went off with out a hitch. Biggest problem was with a custom MOH I had loaded. You must load it on booth the publisher and the subscriber, as it does not replicate like it did in 4.x.

I'm just about to start the planning of such an upgrade.
Quick question , did you have any challenges with any 3rd party services such as Verint?
Also, what was the reason for your upgrade, as i need to produce a business case to release the captial to do the upgrade.

Hi James,
I can't help you with the 3rd party question, but for the Business Case there are many many feature upgrades in CCM 6.x vs CCM 4.x (as you know) This one usually is good for moving management ;-)
End-of-Sale and End-of-Life Announcement for the Cisco Unified CallManager 4.1
Hope this helps!

Cheers Rob
I'm running with the main drivers being EOL , Active/Passive Partitions and the DB (Infomix) allowing Subscriber to handled X-Mobility requests in DR scenarios then re-syncing etc
Just waiting of the 3rd party implementation costs ! eek
