MDS 9134 Basic Config

Hello, I have 2 new MDS 9134 switches. I have connected them using the 10 gb ports. Port 33 on one to port 33 on the other and port 34 on one to port 34 on the other. The device manager still shows down. Do I have to configure these? If so can anyone explain the process or point me to a user guide.

G'day,

You will need to configure the ports to enable ISL traffic to flow over them. These ports are called "E" ports or you can have a trunking "E" port which will carry more than one VSAN (Virtual Storage Area Network) over the link.

If this is your first time diving into fibre or storage networking in general there are some fundamental design rules which need to be covered of before you start.

You really should be using dual switching fabrics. This can be done using your two switches and using vsan 99 on one switch and vsan 100 on the other.

You can still connect these switch for administration purposes but put the two E ports on vsan 88.

You can also trunk vsan 99 and vsan 100 over the ports but you must setup your fcdomain properties (domain id and priority).

There is some basic documentation on the cisco website but now with the wiki available I hope that will improve soon.

I can recommend the storage area network book by Tom Clark as a good background read on fibre channel itself before you release anything to production :)

Cheers

Andrew

We have bought for our Storage Network, two (2) MDS 9134 (DS-C9134-K9) with 2 DS-X2-FC10GB-LR ports. But like you can see in the report below, link still down. Waiting for your feedback to fix the problem, thank a lot .

What is the color of the fiber cable between the 2 ports?

The fibber color is yellow.

We used Single mode with DS-X2-10G-LR= module.

I don't understand why the link can't come up. There is any mystake in my setting?

Config looks good...did you verify that you have the 10G license installed? Also, have you tried a new GBIC or cable? Looks like something physical since both sides show only 1 frame out, and 0 in.

-Mike

Dear Mike,

License has installed on the 2 MDS switches like you can see on the report below. We alo are change DS-X2-FC10G-LR= module without good result.

Tell me, is there any setting we must done for the 10GBASE-LR module, becaus, when I check the speed of the module, I can make changes and I am obliged to use "Auto" (speed are limited to 4 Gbs)

I decided to connect 2 here in the lab to verify there was nothing special needed.

Here are the configs for each end.

pod2-sw4# sh run int fc 1/34

version 3.2(2c)

interface fc1/34

port-license acquire

no shutdown

pod1-9134-35# sh run int fc 1/34

version 4.1(2)

interface fc1/34

port-license acquire

no shutdown

What I did run into was that the TX and RX were swapped in the SM cable I used. I had to swap the cables at one end, and when I did that the green port LED came on and the link popped right up.

pod1-9134-35# sh int fc 1/34

Port vsan is 1

Another engineer replaced the SM cable with a MM cable and it seems to continue to keep working.

Perhaps your cable is also reversed and you can get it working by swapping the TX and RX on one end.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Dear Mike,

Our 10 Gbps module X2-10GB-LR with SN:ECL124903JK for one MDS 9134. You can see in the report below that, there is no signal in RX is it normal? can i have the method to enable the module without doing (No shutdown) on the interface?

I would start with checking the other end, does it also see no RX? If so, then the cable may be swapped like I ran into. Swap the RX and TX fibres on 1 end.

If that does not resolve it, swap the SFP between ends (after restoring the cable to how it was) and see if the 'no RX' moves with the SFP. You can also try moving the SFP and cable to port 1/34 to see if the 'no RX' moves with the SFP and cable.

If it moves with the SFP/cable, then the 1/33 port might be defective. If it moves with the SFP/cable, then I would look at the other ends. TX on 1 side should be RX on the other.

- Mike

You are not getting any OLS or LRR increments, this is a bad cable or the Tx and Rx are crossed. On one switch pult the LC connector apart and swap the individual fibres, so left fibre is on the right and right fibre is on the left.

Dear Support,

Please I need your help to know something. I have two (2) 10 GB module (X2-10GB-LR)for interswitches links between two MDS 9134. Could tell me if I can use them like a FC module or not?

Thank a lot for your support

10 GB FC is only for Switch to Switch, so I'm not sure how to answer the questions. Can you use life FC module? Yes if both FC devices are an MDS swtich either 9134 or 95xx with 10 gig module installed.

Those ports can not be configured to support a 10GB FC host or storage array (I don' believe that that are any).

The ports on the MDS can not be made to work like 1/2 or 4 GB FC ports.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Thank Mike, I want to know if Cisco have a module X2-10GB-LR used for interswitches link?

I know that generally, people used DS-X2-FC10GB-LR module, what about X2-10GB-LR?

Best Regards
