If you have a pair of 6500's running VSS with your VSL link on a seprate line card not the sup engines can you pull out the standby supervisor and continue to pass traffic on the switch with the pulled sup?

Yes you can do , make sure you enabled and disabled the necessary settings.

Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Virtual Switching System (VSS) 1440

According to the link you gave, if you lose the standby sup you lose the standby switch interfaces. So no traffic passes through the stanby switch, or am I reading that wrong.

No, you cannot.

You must have 2 sups for VSS to work.

If you pull out the standby supervisor from the chassis, this part of the VSS switch will stop forwarding traffic.
