I have done both fixed and dynamic allocation of memory on UCCE/ICM Loggers/AW/HDS's and am curious what most people are doing. Is "fixed" the best option? If I have 4GB, is fixing the SQL memory allocation to 2GB the best option?

Good question.

I have always done dynamic on 4GB machines with no limiting - min or max.

It was my understanding that SQL Server 2000 Standard used 2GB max, no matter what, since 2GB goes to the OS and 2GB to user processes. You could apply the /3GB switch in boot.ini and enable 3GB to user processes.

On a big Logger running W2003 Enterprise addressing lots of RAM, and SQL 2000 Enterprise, there could be an argument for fixed memory size, but I don't know what it is. ;-)
