software for asa..differences?

Config file at boot was "startup-config"

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I noticed that Cisco just released asdm508.bin and asa708-k8.bin. What's the diff between those (which the ver # are lower) and the ones I'm using?

That is just the latest release for the 7.0(x). train. You should just be looking for updates in the 8.0(x) train. For feature differences you have to check the release notes.
