Cisco 4500E Supervisor 6E - Number of HSRP instances

Unanswered Question

I'm putting together a design for a transportation scheme. I need to know how many instances of HSRP the switch can support as this dictates the number of VLANs that can be provided.

I have this problem too.

Yes, How much VLAN maximum you can create, HSRP supports same #.

I believe the maximum HSRP group IDs supported is 256. There is not limit to the number of VLAN interfaces configured to a certain HSRP instance.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your help. 256 HSRP groups should be sufficient for this stage in the network's life.

HSRP works within a broadcast domain, so you are allowed to reuse the HSRP group ids on each VLAN. So the maximum groups is 256 per VLAN. That should be enough for anybody!

(That's what Bill Gates said once about 640 kB memory ;-)

I have a design that uses several HSRP groups on a single VLAN and that works fine.
