Have plenty of space, getting (Not enough space) error

On a catalyst c2924c xl switch, I tried upgrading to the latest IOS and got a (not enough space) error when doing a copy tftp flash. I was surprised, after deleting the old IOS as well as the html directory, that it continued to give me this error. I gave up on the upgrade and tried to restore the old IOS file... same issue! I have 3527kb free with the entirety of my flash erased and the files I am trying to tftp over are only 1755kb. Has anyone run into this before?

To permanently erase files tagged as "deleted" or "error" on Class A Flash file systems, use the squeeze command in EXEC mode.

Try:

switch#squeeze flash:

... then confirm how much space is available to you.
