Hi,

I am a total novice with Cisco products, so please be gentle :)

I have a 2950 switch which I need to install 2 GBICs in.

2 questions, firstly, do I need to power down before installing or is it safe to just plug em in, and secondly will they just work or does any configuration need to be done on the switch?

Thanks in advance

Yes, you can just put them in there. They are a hot swappable item. you can configure the interface before or after you install the GBIC.

Hi Nick,

You are very welcomed :) GBICs are hot-swappable and thus you don't need to power down the switch to install them, and you won't need any extra special configuration for them to operate, please check the following link:

[edit] Mark, sorry for the cross post.

BR,

Mohammed Mahmoud.

Thanks to both of you...

One thing Mark, all I want to do is move a couple of servers from normal 100mb port on switch to the GBICs.

I wont need to configure the interface for this will I ?

Ta

You will want to configure the interface just as

you would any normal interface. You can just copy the commands from the existing port (if existing).

Mark
