IP Phones for both 4.1(3) and 6.1(2) CM

Hi,

My company currenlty live on Call Manager 4.1(3) using 7940 IP Phones mostly.

We're going to move to 6.1(2) release during this year.

My proctor wants to know, what IP Phones to buy for now to allow them to work

both with 4.1(3) (now) and 6.1(2) (in the future) Call Managers.

What will be your advice ? May be look for another model, other than 7940 Phones ?

Thanks.

It depends on what functionality you want from the phones if you decide to upgrade but they are all compatible so your 7940's will work on 6.1.

It might also be worth upgrading the firmware on the phones when you upgrade.

Here's a list of all the models and their spec:

Hi Tobivan,

Just to add a note to the really good info from Tim. This is a good call to start moving away from the 7940/7960 2nd Generation IP Phones as these will likely be announced as EoL in the near future :)

Just be careful with Power requirements on the new models to ensure your current Switching infrastructure can run the various models. And make sure that your 4.1(3) build is able to add the Devices under the Device Defaults.

Two likely choices for replacements for the 7940's are the 7941G and 7845G (Gig 10/100/1000);

Cisco Unified IP Phone 7945G (Color 10/100/1000)

Power

Supports IEEE 802.3af PoE (Class 3).

Call Control Compatibility

Supported in Cisco Unified Communications Manager Versions 4.1(3)sr5b, 4.2(3)sr2b, 4.3(1), 5.1.1(b), 5.1(2), 6.0(1) and greater

Supported in Cisco Unified Communications Express and SRST Version 4.1

Cisco Unified IP Phone 7941G (Black and White 10/100)
