Cat2960: FastEthernet does not come up - 1 interface resets

Hi everybody.

Our AIX-Team installed a new Server, which has problems getting the Management-Interface up. We tried switching cables and switching ports, no success. Not good, but nothing special.

But what I really don't get is interface resets counter in the show interface-output:

======================

n99903-ms02#clear counter

Clear "show interface" counters on all interfaces [confirm]y

[power on server]

n99903-ms02#sh int fa0/23

FastEthernet0/23 is down, line protocol is down (notconnect)

Hardware is Fast Ethernet, address is 0019.065b.a019 (bia 0019.065b.a019)

Description: s002fa

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,

reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

Keepalive set (10 sec)

Auto-duplex, Auto-speed, media type is 10/100BaseTX

input flow-control is off, output flow-control is unsupported

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input never, output never, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters 00:00:34

Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0

Queueing strategy: fifo

Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)

5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

0 packets input, 0 bytes, 0 no buffer

Received 0 broadcasts (0 multicast)

0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

0 watchdog, 0 multicast, 0 pause input

0 input packets with dribble condition detected

0 packets output, 0 bytes, 0 underruns

0 output errors, 0 collisions, 1 interface resets

0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred

0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 PAUSE output

0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

n99903-ms02#sh run int fa0/23

Building configuration...

Current configuration : 207 bytes

!

interface FastEthernet0/23

description s002fa

switchport access vlan 12

no logging event link-status

mls qos trust dscp

no snmp trap link-status

spanning-tree portfast

spanning-tree guard root

end

======================

The counter stays the same for several hours - just the interface reset in the first second. The Event does not produce any log-entry.

Is there any clear interpretation of a link, which is notconnect, but, has no packets in or out, but starts with an Interface reset? Can we blame the Server-NIC for sure, or is there perhaps a misconfiguration somewhere? We have the same behavior on all 4 interfaces of the Server, so before I accuse the Hardware I prefer to be sure, that it is not a fault on the network-side...

thx in adanvace for any hints

greetings from berne, switzerland

stefan mueller

I have this problem too.

Hello Stefan,

Determining if it is a failure on the network-side can best be done by connecting another device to the "unwilling" switchport. If that does not result in a link either, you may have a defective port.

Also be sure to check the overall cable length and any patches it may contain.

regards,

Leo
