I'm trying to understand difference between next modules for Cisco MDS 9500-

Storage Services Module,Fibre Channel Module and Fibre Channel Switching Module.

DS-X9032-SSM Cisco MDS 9000 Family 32-Port Storage Services Module

DS-X9032 Cisco MDS 9000 Family 32-Port 1/2-Gbps Fibre Channel Module

DS-X9124 Cisco MDS 9000 Family 1/2/4-Gbps 24-Port Fibre Channel Switching Module

DS-X9148 Cisco MDS 9000 Family 1/2/4-Gbps 48-Port Fibre Channel Switching Module

G'day,

DS-X9032-SSM Cisco MDS 9000 Family 32-Port Storage Services Module is a 32x 2gb over subscribed (4 to 1) line card that also acts as a "services" module for SANTAP.

DS-X9032 Cisco MDS 9000 Family 32-Port 1/2-Gbps Fibre Channel Module is a 32x 2gb over subscribed (4 to 1) linecard.

DS-X9124 Cisco MDS 9000 Family 1/2/4-Gbps 24-Port Fibre Channel Switching Module is a 2nd generation 24x 4gb line card over subscribed that can be used for both storage ports (disk/tape) and host ports. This is generally because you can dedicate a certain amount of bandwidth to an individual port where the 1st generation cards cannot.

DS-X9148 Cisco MDS 9000 Family 1/2/4-Gbps 48-Port Fibre Channel Switching Module is a 2nd generation 48x 4gb line card over subscribed that is generally used as a host attachment line card.

Hope that helps!

In case i want connect servers and storages i should use Fibre Channel Switching Modules?

Difference between DS-X9032 Cisco MDS 9000 Family 32-Port 1/2-Gbps Fibre Channel Module and DS-X9148 Cisco MDS 9000 Family 1/2/4-Gbps 48-Port Fibre Channel Switching Module is only in bandwith( 1/2Gb vs 1/2/4Gb) and ports(32 ports vs 48 ports)?

G'day,

The 2nd Generation modules also let you dedicate a certain amount of bandwidth to a port within a port group (A port group basically shares the ASIC which controls the ports).

I would recommend that you go with the second generation modules.

Cheers

Andrew
