Inter-AS for IP Transit Provider

Unanswered Question
Jul 30th, 2008

We are an IP Transit provider, eBGP connection to our ISP upstream provider. We have multiple STM1 connection to our ISP upstream provider. Our upstream provider propose to sell us MPLS VPN and IP over the existing connection to connect our local MPLS customers to foreign countries. Is this possible and if yes, can someone send us any Cisco reference document link.

I have this problem too.

If you are an IP transit provider, You wont be able to use standard features like CsC (carrier-sense-carrier) to provide MPLS connectivity to your local customers. This would require you to be a MPLS network.

The only possible solution for you is to configure tunnels (GRE) from your ASBR to all the PEs having mpls customers attached. Then you can run MPLS on these tunnels ( MPLSoGRE ).

This would be the only possible method but MPLSoGRE might have limitations as to on what hardware/platform it is supported.
