GSS and CNR

Ahmed Shahzad

GSS along with CNR can offloading or replaces any DNS BIND. CNR is required for GSS to act as a full flesh DNS Server. I have following queries regarding CNR:

1. Can we configure other than A records like MX records in CNR?

2. URL having documentation to configure CNR?

Thanks & Regards,

Shahzad.

Name server value will be the value that you used while domain registration

for example for cisco.com the NS records are

cisco.com nameserver = ns2.cisco.com

cisco.com nameserver = ns1.cisco.com

ns2.cisco.com internet address = 64.102.255.44

ns1.cisco.com internet address = 128.107.241.185

so NS records will be ns1.cisco.com 128.107.241.185& ns2.cisco.com 64.102.255.44.

HI Shahzad,

If you wants full DNS appliance or DHCP support or GSLB for other DNS record types, order the Cisco GSS DNS license (SF-GSS-DNSLIC) plus the Cisco Network Registrar software (CNR-6.3-BASE1K is the recommended base Cisco Network Registrar software for the Cisco GSS).

The Cisco GSS DNS software license allows you to load Cisco Network Registrar software onto your Cisco GSS 4492R, which transforms the Cisco GSS 4492R into a standards-compliant DNS and DHCP appliance that offers a very advanced feature set, including support for incremental zone transfers, dynamic updates, and notification. The Cisco Network Registrar DHCP server supports DHCP Safe Failover (redundant DHCP servers), dynamic DNS updates, DOCSIS cable modems, and integration with directory services using Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Version 3 (LDAPv3).

Note:

• Cisco Network Registrar software must be acquired separately. You must load Cisco Network Registrar Release 6.3 or higher on the Cisco GSS device to get the additional DNS and DHCP capabilities

• Cisco GSS Software Release 2.0(2) or higher must be loaded on the Cisco GSS device.

Kindly refer the following page for yor queries

Hi All,

Thanks Sachin for your reply.

We already have placed the order for the following licenses along with GSS:

SF-GSS-V2.0-K9

SF-GSS-DNSLIC=

CNR-SOFTWARE

CNR-6.3-BASE1K

CNR-6.3-ADD5K

Do we not need any in-house external DNS Server? Can we configure a full flesh DNS on CNR along with MX records etc.

I need URL explaining to configure CNR?

Regards,

Shahzad.

Shahzad~

CNR is a fullfledge DNS Server. It can replace

any BIND implementation. In fact since its not open code its not vulnerable to BIND vulnerabilities. In addition the GSS has integrated DDOS mitigation software while BIND does not.

GSS (with CNR )can also be used as secondary DNS server to the BIND name servers.

GSS - CNR Installation

Thanks

Thank you Sachin & Iftikhar,

It is confirmed by the Gurus that CNR is a fulfledge DNS Server. I have six SGG along with the license of CNR, so I do not need any other DNS Server. I can use these GSS as DNS Servers.

In this scenario, what will be the Name Server value while defining Zone or Domain (xyz.com)?

Thanks & Regards,

Shahzad.

Shahzad

Name server value will be the value that you used while domain registration

for example for cisco.com the NS records are

cisco.com nameserver = ns2.cisco.com

cisco.com nameserver = ns1.cisco.com

ns2.cisco.com internet address = 64.102.255.44

ns1.cisco.com internet address = 128.107.241.185

so NS records will be ns1.cisco.com 128.107.241.185& ns2.cisco.com 64.102.255.44.
