How to upgrade IOS when IOS had been deleted

Hi to all,

Sorry to say this but I had accidentally deleted the old IOS image on my 3550 switch before uploading the new one. Now when the switch starts, it will always says boot failed and go to the "switch" prompt. This is the first time I encountered this problem and do not know how to fix it. Can someone help to assist on the problem? I am using only Windows XP Hyper Terminal to access the switch via Console.

Many many thanks,

Tan

Tan,

Right you are in a bit of trouble then! OK - what you need to do is upload an IOS image via xmodem - you need to have a terminal program that supports it, luckly windows HyperTerm does, the below links explain the various ways:-

http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/paws/15085/xmodem_generic.pdf

Hi Tan,

Here's what you need:

Recovering Catalyst Fixed Configuration Switches from a Corrupted or Missing Image

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_tech_note09186a0080169696.shtml#subtopic1a

You would have to initiate Xmodem and even before you do that, increase the baud rate to 115200. The procedure is included in the above document.

Tan,

Is the current image in flash a valid image? If so - "sometimes" the boot loader config, which points to an image not in flash - will ignore any other images in the flash - config the new image to use:-

boot system flash <>

Hi Andrew,

Sorry but there are no longer any images on the switch at all. When I am at the "switch" prompt and try to access the "flash" directory, i got an error about "access deny". I need to know how can I get another valid image back into the switch and subsequently continue from there.

Your answer and help are greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Tan
