Hi,
I am trying to upgrade my switches to the latest and greatest IOS. Some of my switches have a web interface, some do not. I know you can do much more with CLI, but installing web access and CLI are not MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE, right!? :)
Questions:
1. How do I use the DIR (or another) command to view the file structure on a switch with the web interface installed?
2. I tried to copy the directory to flash, it didn't work. Why?
3. One of the reasons I want to upgrade to the web is to give the helpdesk the ability to change the description of the port when users or devices change. Can I restrict web access to specific features?
Thanks for your help!

Scott,
Which device are you attempting to install the web based device manager? I will assume the 3560/3750 is what you are asking for. You will need to download the correct image (should be the .tar file) to copy via TFTP and extract it to flash.
archive tar /xtract
If this is not what you need let me know.
Mark.

AHA....
Copy and THEN extract! I was trying to extract on my PC and then copy!! :-)
And YES *blushes, embarrassed* these are 3560 switches. That helps, right? ;-)
THANKS A LOT!! (I've been looking for over 2 hours...)
How do I point IOS to boot to the new version if it's in a sub directory?
If I may RANT for a second-- The Cisco documentation says very little about the option switches for the commands. At least the CLI guide and Confguration guides.

Scott,
I am glad I assumed right. You don't have to extract to a sub directory. If you do want to boot from a sub directory here is an example.
boot system flash:/subdirectoryname/IOSname.bin

Mark,
Thanks again. And for the quick reply.
One last one for the road..
Can I enable help desk access to the switch with limited (like vlan and description) access?
If so, how?

There is a way to give limited access to different user accounts and assign commands to them. Hopefully this guide will help.

You may want to take a look at CNA in order to manage your switches via GUI. Not all devices are supported but here is a list:
Here are some details about it:

The boot system command does not work in a 3560. I can't even do a "?" to see the options for the command. This isn't a stacked config, just standalone units.
Thanks,

you need to be in global config mode. :o)

OK, everything is working now.
But.......
I had to use the MKDIR command for the folder. That was fine, except that now I have a folder within a folder, for no reason.
The xtract command would not work without it.
Any thoughts?
