You can take any or all of the CCNP exams before completing CCNA. However, CCNA is a prerequisite for CCNP, so you will have to complete CCNA before you will be recognized as a CCNP.

Hope this helps. If so, please rate the post.

You must have a valid CCNA in order to gain CCNP status. This doesn't stop you taking the CCNP exams, but even if you pass them all you won't be given the CCNP status until you retake your CCNA.

I thought a passed CCNP test automatically re-upped an expired ccna? Isn't that true anymore?

From the Cisco CCNA Page:

CCNA certifications are valid for three years. To recertify, either pass the current CCNA exam, or pass the ICND2 exam, or pass any 642 professional level or Cisco Specialist exam (excluding Sales Specialist exams), or pass a current CCIE written exam.

A CCNP exam will recertify an active CCNA, but will not reinstate an expired CCNA.

Sorry if this is out of topic range but taking any of the 642-*** tests should "renew" your CCNA but for how long?

I have about another 6-7 months so I am preping to take the 642-812. How long will this give me to complete the other needed tests needed for CCNP?

And sorry to drag out but how long is the CCNP good for before having to renew?

Passing a 642 professional level exam will renew your CCNA for 3 years. Most individual tests are also good for 3 years, so you will have 3 years from the time of passing the first CCNP test to pass the last one. The CCNP is also valid for 3 years.

Hope this helps.

Hi All,

I have the same case where i was also ccna certified until 2007 of march. now,it is clear to me that to obtain status of ccna(activated) i have to take exam bearing code of 642. Am I right?

Thanks Brandon

Hi Danny,

If your CCNA is marked as expired then sadly you must have missed the 3 year date from when you first passed. If that is the case then this will not recertify the CCNA.

Sorry my friend,

Rob

hi,

Hi Danny,

Yes, the 642 level exam must be passed before the CCNA expires to re-certify. You are free to take the CCNP exams but you will not be certified as a CCNP without a valid CCNA cert as a prerequisite:(

Hope this helps!
