Hi friends,
I am looking for a 2800 router working as a Terminal server or console server.
I need console connections to 4 Cisco devices from the terminal server and the terminal server also needs to have the capability to dial in.
I am not clear about which wic/hwic would be suitable to meet this requirement? Will hwic-4a/s suffice?
Also, i read that the old routers used octal cable that had 8 RJ-45 plugs to connect to router consoles. I am not sure if i can use the same octal cable even in 2800 routers.
For dial-in, i believe that a modem connected to an AUX port should be good enough on the terminal server? Or is there any other better option?
Looking forward to your kind suggestions
Thanks a lot
Gautam

Hi Gautam,
You can use HWIC-8A w/ CAB-HD8-ASYNC which has 8 RJ-45 connectors.

Thanks a lot for the info.
So it means, that i will use only one port on the hwic-8a. This one physical port on hwic-8a is good enough to provide connectivity to 8 devices. Right?
Also, what about the dial-in options? Can the same hwic be used? I believe that the same hwic can be used with the same cable but i may need an adapter viz. CAB-25AS-MMOD. Please let me know if that would be the right option? thanks a lot

Thanks for this article. But i still wanted to confirm that will this cable CAB-HD8-ASYNC consume just one port from the 8 ports to manage 4 devices out of band.
Also, for the dial in option for this router, i wanted to know if we can use the AUX port on terminal server for connecting to external modem or can we use a port on the hwic-8a card itself and if yes, what will be the right cable / adapter for this purpose?
Thanks a lot

Gautam,
That's correct. The 8-Port Asynchronous High-Speed WAN Interface Card use one (HWIC-8A) high-density 8-port connectors. The 8-port asynchronous cable provides the high-density connector on one end and eight RJ-45 plugs on the other. RJ-45- to DB-25 modular adapters are used to convert the RJ-45 to DB-25 DTE or DB-25 DCE connections.
For information on connecting an external modem and the exact cable/connector types needed, refer to the following documents:
