Hello All,

Why a

1)Cisco IP Communicator uses 3 licenses?

2)A 7941 uses 4 licenses?

3)A 7971 uses 5 licenses?

What is the theory behind that? in my mind I was thinking like one of the licenses is needed for the CallManager and another one for Unity voicemail and the third one perhaps for the exchange. This is just a guess and not really sure. My question for you guys is; why a 7971 uses 5 licenses and a 7941 4 and a softphone 3? Could someone please shade some lights on this?

These DLUs do not include any VM licenses. Cisco simply assigned different DLU counts to these phone types, so basically it costs you more to add 797X phones than 794X/6X phones, not only are they more expensive but also licensing for these phones is more expensive :-)

This is the question that my boss had asked me. He doesn't have any technical background and is not satisfied with the answer I gave him based on your reply. Is there anywhere that I can read a little bit more about it and give hime some tangible answer?

Pass this doc along to your Manager. It has some good explanations to this and other licensing questions;

Q. Is the unit allocation in the Cisco licensing program consistent across devices?

A. Device licenses are required for Cisco devices and for third-party devices, with the flexibility to replace third-party devices with Cisco devices. Device licenses are sold in increments of device-license units. Device-license units are assigned to each device connected to Cisco Unified Communications Manager 5.0 and later. Each device is assigned a unit number based on the type and capabilities of the device. Devices with more complex and high-end capabilities are assigned a higher number of units compared to devices with basic capabilities.
