Fractional PRI

Answered Question
Aug 21st, 2008

On what protocol can fractional PRI be configured, H.323 or MGCP? Think it's H.323 but not sure.

I have this problem too.

Hi Ashok,

Note: Cisco CallManager does not support the configuration or use of a fractional PRI when you use it with MGCP. If fractional PRI is necessary you can use H.323 instead of MGCP.

How to Configure MGCP with Digital PRI and Cisco CallManager

The workaround for using a Fractional PRI with MGCP was perfectly detailed recently by Paul from Cisco;

Deji,

Need one more favour. Could you please give me the sample configs for each protocol?

Regards,

Ashok.

singh-ashok Thu, 08/21/2008 - 01:39

Deji you simply rock! Just one more favour here - I see there are 2 options of configuring MGCP - Automatic, where the config gets downloaded from CCM & manual. Is there any particular reason for using any particular method?

Regards,

Ashok.

Ayodeji oladipo... Thu, 08/21/2008 - 01:43

Using the CCM-Config command makes configuration easier..Some pople like it, some dont. I dont like it because sometimes it can give you problems.

Baiscally, the ccm-config methos configures the oruter automatically, and the manual one is manual

Thanks again Deji for all the time you took out today to answer all my queries. Happy weekend!!

Fractional E1 may not be supported with MGCP but its certainly configurable. Register your Voice Gateway with callmanager using the ccm-manager config command, but then remove this command and reconfigure the E1 as fractional. Works for me everytime.

singh-ashok Thu, 08/21/2008 - 05:22

Hi Rob,

Just curious here - is something similar ( Fractional PRI) possible with SIP gateways?

Regards,

Ashok.

rob.huffman Thu, 08/21/2008 - 05:41

Hey Ashok,

First off you are most welcome :) Can't wait for the weekend, it can't come fast enough!

I am not very familiar with SIP :( I do know that this clip is very applicable;

Capacity scaling: IP traffic is not bound to strict timeslot capacity of TDM trunks. Thus it is easier to scale the call capacity of Unified Communications trunks. Moreover, bandwidth can be dynamically allocated based on the application mix, number of sessions, etc. for optimum performance of the currently active applications.

From these excellent White Papers;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps5640/prod_white_papers_list.html

Hope this helps!

Rob
