Firstly - you shhould be receving alot of traffic on your port niffing software - a clear indication is receving frames destined for the MAC address on the port your are monitoring.

Secondly issue the command "show port monitor fa x/x" at the command line and it will output what ports are being monitored and which ports the info is being sent to.

The configuration is specific to the switching platform you are using.

Cisco calls it SPAN (Switched Port ANalyzer) and here is link that should cover every switching and describing how to it it up
