Smartnet and MARS

Do I need smartnet to download and install upgrades and be able to get the IPS updates for MARS? Currently my support ran out and is 9K to renew. I never call tech support so it's kind of useless right?

I did confirm I can still download updates! But is this a fluke?

You need to authenticate to get access, so I believe the fact that you have access is probably a "fluke". You can probably expect that to go away eventually --maybe sooner rather than later since this post;-)

It's just a server, so parts will eventually fail and you *will* eventually need support. You could just wait until that happens before you actually purchase support, but that implies some extra downtime.

You must have another service contract associated with your CCO, otherwise you would not have been able to download (CCO - Top Right >> Profile >> Additional Access). Legally you need a service contract to download updates.

Also you say you don't need support, but what if you face a bug? Or your hard drive crashes?
