Hi all,

i did this command on switch

sh int fa 3/37 capabilities

can anyone explain me what does this mean Ports on ASIC: 37-48 ??

this tells that ports 37-48 share an ASIC hardware resource on the switch (a chip with given features and performances)

this is often referred as port grouping here 12 ports are serviced by one ASIC because it is a linecard WS-X6148-RJ-21.

This is a C6500 modular switch.

this command tells what types of ASICs are on the linecard.

if 12 ports for chip means 4 ASIC of each type.

These ASIC hardware also manage the connection to the switch bus that could be 8Gbps (4 Gbps + 4 Gbps)

There are several generations of linecards connecting to the system bus and/or using a 256 Gbps switching fabric and/or a 720 Gbps switching fabric (from this the name of SUP720)

so on 12 ports of the same group you can go up to what the ASIC can handle if it were 1 GBps you cannot have all 12 FE at full speed at the same time.

If it is more no problems.

This parameter is important on 48 GE linecard where the grouping tells what performance you can expect on ports.

sh int f3/37 should provide info on queues

but that module has 48 ports and sh asic slot 3 shows count 4 and 1 .

what does count 4 and 1 indicate?

total number of ports?

Hello Mahesh,

good observation: there are 4 COIL Asics managing 12 ports each and only one pinnacle that should be the ASIC that interface the linecars to the system bus.

for C6500 architecture

look on CCO I think you can find some explanations

using "C6500 internal architecture" to search

so Pinnacle is also Asic and my understanding is that ASIC is hardware chip on Line cards right?

Linecard to system bus?

i have seen few switches where this is no Pinnacle when u do sh asic slot command whis it is liek that?so these switch how they connect to system bus then without pinnacle?
