I am about to start a new job and I am in the really fortunate position that training will be provided to CCNP.

My question is any guidance on labs. I have 2 x 2600s but really need a layer 3 switch. Its the IOS versions that confuse me. OK I can upgrade but what would be the minimum hardware o run the right switch IOS.

Pete,

I would go with the 3560 series switch. It is a layer three switch that will work great in your lab. Here is a quick breakdown of the available feature sets for the switch.

IP Base: This image has Layer 2+ and basic Layer 3 routing features.

IP Services: This image has both Layer 2+ and full Layer 3 routing features.

Advanced IP Services: This image has all the IP services image (formerly known as the EMI) features and the capability for unicast routing of IPv6 packets.

If you want to take full advantage of the switch the IP services IOS would be best. If you have a need for IPv6 the advanced IP services IOS would be the way to go.

HTH,

Mark
