How to replace a failed(not redundant) supervisor for Core switch 4506

Hello all,

Please help me with this "how-to".

This 4506 is VTP server. Totally we have 2 core switches 4506.(both are the same VTP Domain server)

My question is:

1. do I need to shut down the switch as no redundant supervisor? If no, after the replacement is inserted, should I need to modify the configuration?

2. What are the main steps?

1. All Catalyst 4000 family switches support hot swapping, which lets you install, remove, replace, and rearrange supervisor engines and switching modules without powering the system off. When the system detects that a switching module has been installed or removed, it runs diagnostic and discovery routines automatically, acknowledges the presence or absence of the module, and resumes system operation with no operator intervention.


Disconnect any network interface cables attached to the ports on the supervisor engine that you intend to remove


Loosen the captive installation screws


Grasp the left and right ejector levers and simultaneously pivot the levers outward to release the supervisor engine from the backplane connector


Grasp the front panel of the supervisor engine with one hand and place your other hand under the carrier to support and guide it out of the slot. Do not touch the printed circuit boards or connector pins.


Carefully pull the supervisor engine straight out of the slot, keeping your other hand under the carrier to guide it. Place the supervisor engine on an antistatic mat or antistatic foam, or immediately install it in another slot.


To install the new supervisor engine, grasp the switching module front panel with one hand and place your other hand under the carrier to support the supervisor engine


Align the edges of the supervisor engine carrier with the slot guides on the sides of the switch chassis,


Pivot the two module ejector levers out and away from the faceplate


Carefully slide the supervisor engine into the slot until the notches on both ejector levers engage the chassis sides


Using the thumb and forefinger of each hand, simultaneously pivot in both ejector levers to fully seat the supervisor engine in the backplane connector


Use a screwdriver to tighten the captive installation screws


Ensure that the LED labeled Status is green (module operational).


When the switch is online, enter the show module command. Verify that the system acknowledges the new module and that the module's status is good.

If you have no redundant supervisor then just shut it down , its not working anyway. Hopefully you have the config on a tftp server somewhere , if not then you have an issue. Ideally if you have a backup chassis that you can throw the new supervisor into and power up to get it configured thats the way to go , just get the replacement on the air and download the config file into startup config and power off . If no spare chassis then you are relegated to copy and pasting the config into the supervisor from the console. Move the supervisor to the new chassis and power up. If its a vtp server it will learn any vlans from the backup vtp server when it comes on the air.
